Mamanuca Islands, Fiji

The Mamanuca Islands of Fiji are a volcanic archipelago lying to the west of Nadi and to the south of the Yasawa Islands. The group, a popular tourist destination, consists of about 20 islands, but about seven of these are covered by the Pacific Ocean at high tide.
The Mamanuca Islands, just off the coast of Denarau offer crystal clear waters, palm fringed sandy beaches and live coral reefs. There are islands, villages, great resorts to visit, snorkelling and swimming.
One of the islands, Monuriki, was the main location for the 2000 film Cast Away.

The South Sea Pacific islands have a reputation for amazing beaches which make them a coveted honeymoon destination, and the Mamanuca group of islands has some of the best beaches in Fiji. It is a volcanic archipelago for which the word idyllic might have been created. To really fulfil the desert island fantasy head to the Monuriki Islands which were where the Tom Hanks movie Cast Away was filmed. Although some of the islands are covered during high tide, the rest draw quite a few tourists.

Morne Rouge Bay, Grenada

Triangular in shape, this West facing plot overlooks Morne Rouge Bay capturing a stunning sea view during the day and breathtaking sunsets at night. In total this lot is approximately 29,310 sq. ft. however there are plans to divide it into three smaller plots of equal size. Each of the three lots will be approximately 10,000 sq. ft. large. A 2 minute walk through a well-manicured public right-of way takes you onto Morne Rouge Beach. It is approximately 10 minutes from Point Salines International airport, 2 minutes from the world famous Grand Anse beach and 15 minutes from the Capital City of St.George’s.

Known as the ‘Spice Island’, Grenada is a hidden gem in the Caribbean. There is plenty to see and do in Grenada including an inordinate amount of waterfalls but relaxing on the beach is always high on everyone’s list. Morne Rouge Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island and is small, calm and secluded. That makes it ideal for swimming and family holidays. There are also plenty of trees to provide shade from the sun.

The Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

Nicoya is a town in Costa Rica's Guanacaste province, and one of its most important tourist zones. It serves as a transport hub to Guanacaste's beaches and national parks. According to the 2000 census, the city's population was 13,334; second only to Liberia in the province. The city is also the district seat of a cantón of the same name, which in 2000 had 20,945 residents.

For a truly Central American experience head to the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica where fantastic black sand beaches are bordered by thick forest. Surfing is definitely on the menu here and a whole bohemian culture has grown up alongside the sport. Hammocked accommodation caters to a variety of interesting characters and Nicoya is also a thriving location for eco-tourism. Head to the Montezuma Waterfall for an unforgettable day out.

Nissi Beach, Cyprus

Cyprus may be a long plane ride for some Europeans, but it has some of the best Mediterranean beaches. Nissi Beach is the jewel in the crown, with dazzling turquoise water which is calm and shallow - perfect for family holidays. Nissi gets overcrowded in the summer, but with Cyprus enjoying amazing spring and autumn weather there is no need to fight for space. However, you may have to share your spot with the huge pelicans which like to prowl around.

Nissi Beach is located two kilometres west of Agia Napa and attracts thousands of tourists every year.  This 600 metres long 40 metres wide beach is covered with fine golden sand. It is well sheltered from the wind and has calm waters. Water sports, sun bed and umbrella hire are available on site. There are accommodation facilities, restaurants, convenience stores and a diving school nearby. Lifeguards are on duty with lifesaving equipment from 10:00 to 18:00 hours during the bathing season. The beach is easily accessible by car, motorbike and bicycle, and on foot.

Fistral Beach, Newquay

Swimming in the UK is only for the brave, even in the summer, but the spectacular scenery of Cornwall makes it all worthwhile. Located in the far south west of England, this corner of the earth is truly blessed. Green rolling hills and pretty country lanes give way to secluded coves which are deserted in the winter but packed in the summer. Newquay also hosts surf competitions.

Fistral Beach is Newquay's iconic beach, quite simply one of the most consistent and best surfing beaches in the UK and Europe. This beautiful beach is west facing, long and sandy and backed by rocks and cliffs. Fistral is the perfect family beach offering simple pleasures of sea and surf combined with first class beach and seafront facilities including surf equipment hire, lessons and boutiques, showers, toilets, car parking, restaurants and cafes.

Playa del Mar Beach, Argentina

This huge beach welcomes the beautiful people of Buenos Aires every summer and they come to seen and be seen. Impromptu games of football and volley ball break out and the women flirt with surfers as they dash out to catch excellent waves. Playa del Mar is home to some of the best nightclubs in Argentina including the El Divino all nighter.

Mar del Plata is Argentina's premiere beach resort, offering 17 kilometers of beaches, sports fishing, colonial architecture, a university, sports, zoo, casino and lively nightlife plus a number of parks and gardens to tempt the visitor.

Santa Cruz Beach (Boardwalk), California

If you want muscles, bikinis and roller-blading then head for the famous Venice beach in Los Angeles, but for real Californian charm Santa Cruz is special. The beach also has a long boardwalk with fair ground rides which overlook the foreboding Pacific. This is the oldest amusement park in California. Nearby surfers jostle with seals for the best waves, and the giant Californian Redwood trees make for a stunning backdrop. This may not be one of the best quality beaches in the world, but it is certainly one of the most atmospheric. Nearby is Monterey Bay, setting for the John Steinbeck novel Cannery Row.

The Boardwalk extends along the coast of the Monterey Bay, from just east of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf to the mouth of the San Lorenzo River. At the western edge of the park lies a large building originally known as the Neptune Casino (which does not offer gambling), which contains a video arcade, an indoor miniature golf course, a laser tag arena and the Cocoanut Grove banquet room and conference center. A Laffing Sal automated character, from San Francisco's Playland, is viewable near the miniature golf course.

The Crane Beach, Barbados

The pink sand of the Crane Beach in Barbados is wonderfully fine, pounded into submission by powerful Atlantic waves. The sea here is fierce, better for body boarding than swimming, and you can rent boards next to the lifeguards hut. This is a long beach and the views are spectacular, especially from the hotel on the cliff above. Strong winds mean that you won’t feel yourself burning, so constantly reapply suncream.

Diani Beach, Kenya

Diani Beach is a major beach resort on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. It is 30 kilometres south of Mombasa, in the Coast Province. The beach is about 25 kilometres long, until it merges with the small town of Ukunda, which has a small airstrip.

For vast expanses of white sand, the east coast of Africa is incomparable. Here you can feel truly at peace in a place which puts your spirit at rest. Make friends with the local fishermen and they may even sail you to a private beach where you can have freshly cooked lobster under the stars. For the more active this is one of the best beaches in the world for kite surfing. On land there are monkeys, while in the sea fish swim around coral reefs.

Chalok Lam Beach, Thailand

Chalok Lam is lesser known than Haad Rin Beach (also on the island of Ko Pha Ngan) but a much better bet if you want to get away from it all. While Haad Rin hosts the crazy Full Moon parties, it is more enjoyable to stay somewhere relaxing and catch the boat to the party. Surrounded by mountains, Chalok Lam is the kind of beach that Alex Garland envisaged.
